yata-yamam gata-rasam
puti paryusitam ca yat
ucchistam api camedhyam
bhojanam tamasa-priyam

yata-yamam--food cooked three hours before being eaten; gata-rasam--tasteless; puti--bad-smelling; paryusitam--decomposed; ca--also; yat--that which; ucchistam--remnants of food eaten by others; api--also; ca--and; amedhyam--untouchable; bhojanam--eating; tamasa--to one in the mode of darkness; priyam--dear.

TRANSLATION

Food prepared more than three hours before being eaten, food that is tasteless, decomposed and putrid, and food consisting of remnants and untouchable things is dear to those in the mode of darkness.

TRANSLATION

Foods that are too bitter, too sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry and burning are dear to those in the mode of passion. Such foods cause distress, misery and disease.

ayuh--duration of life; sattva--existence; bala--strength; arogya--health; sukha--happiness; priti--and satisfaction; vivardhanah--increasing; rasyah--juicy; snigdhah--fatty; sthirah--enduring; hrdyah--pleasing to the heart; aharah--food; sattvika--to one in goodness; priyah--palatable.

TRANSLATION

Foods dear to those in the mode of goodness increase the duration of life, purify one's existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such foods are juicy, fatty, wholesome, and pleasing to the heart.

JOURNAL:

Milk is a prime source of healthy fat. I do not need to eat meat to receive animal fat. Milk products can provide this in a much better way.

aharah--eating; tu--certainly; api--also; sarvasya--of everyone; tri-vidhah--of three kinds; bhavati--there is; priyah--dear; yajnah--sacrifice; tapah--austerity; tatha--also; danam--charity; tesam--of them; bhedam--the differences; imam--this; srnu--hear.

TRANSLATION

Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the three modes of material nature. The same is true of sacrifices, austerities and charity. Now hear of the distinctions between them.

JOURNAL:

To rise above the modes of material natural I must first be on the platform of goodness. What follows in the Gita is a description of those things I need to concentrate on to be in this mode along with descriptions of what I need to avoid.

asastra--not in the scriptures; vihitam--directed; ghoram--harmful to others; tapyante--undergo; ye--those who; tapah--austerities; janah--persons; dambha--with pride; ahankara--and egoism; samyuktah--engaged; kama--of lust; raga--and attachment; bala--by the force; anvitah--impelled; karsayantah--tormenting; sarira-stham--situated within the body; bhuta-gramam--the combination of material elements; acetasah--having a misled mentality; mam--Me; ca--also; eva--certainly; antah--within; sarira-stham--situated in the body; tan--them; viddhi--understand; asura-niscayan--demons.

TRANSLATION

Those who undergo severe austerities and penances not recommended in the scriptures, performing them out of pride and egoism, who are impelled by lust and attachment, who are foolish and who torture the material elements of the body as well as the Supersoul dwelling within, are to be known as demons.

There Are No Bachelors

"The modern, rascal civilization, they do not know actually what is the end of suffering." "They are thinking that here, this, a small span of life, say fifty years, sixty years, one hundred years utmost, if we get a nice wife, a nice apartment, a nice motor car, running with seventy miles speed, and a nice whiskey bottle, that is the purpose."

This was my vision of life. Even after I started on the path of devotional service this vision was so ingrained in me that I continued to live it for awhile. Back in December of last year I started down the road. At fifty-one years old and my marriage on the rocks it seemed the right thing to do.

As I look back over the last nine months I can see something of the Varnasrama-dharma in my life. As my walk with the Lord has grown more intimate I have begun to wonder if Krishna has forced me into vanaprastha; the retired life. The earmarks are there. I am over fifty and I left my wife living with her oldest son.

There is an example of this lifestyle in Srimad Bhagavatam 1.15.39; "Then he posted Vajra, the son of Aniruddha [grandson of Lord Kṛṣṇa], at Mathurā as the King of Śūrasena. Afterwards Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira performed a Prājāpatya sacrifice and placed in himself the fire for quitting household life." Srila Prabhupada states in his purport; The scientific system of varṇāśrama-dharma divides the human life into four divisions of occupation and four orders of life. The four orders of life as brahmacārī, gṛhastha, vānaprastha and sannyāsī are to be followed by all, irrespective of the occupational division.

In Srimad Bhagavatam 7.12.17-24 we have a discription of vanaprastha:
(17) O King, I shall now describe the qualifications for a vānaprastha, one who has retired from family life. By rigidly following the rules and regulations for the vānaprastha, one can easily be elevated to the upper planetary system known as Maharloka. (18) A person in vānaprastha life should not eat grains grown by tilling of the fields. He should also not eat grains that have grown without tilling of the field but are not fully ripe. Nor should a vānaprastha eat grains cooked in fire. Indeed, he should eat only fruit ripened by the sunshine. (19) A vānaprastha should prepare cakes to be offered in sacrifice from fruits and grains grown naturally in the forest. When he obtains some new grains, he should give up his old stock of grains. (20) A vānaprastha should prepare a thatched cottage or take shelter of a cave in a mountain only to keep the sacred fire, but he should personally practice enduring snowfall, wind, fire, rain and the shining of the sun. (21) The vānaprastha should wear matted locks of hair on his head and let his body hair, nails and moustache grow. He should not cleanse his body of dirt. He should keep a waterpot, deerskin and rod, wear the bark of a tree as a covering, and use garments colored like fire.(22)Being very thoughtful, a vānaprastha should remain in the forest for twelve years, eight years, four years, two years or at least one year. He should behave in such a way that he will not be disturbed or troubled by too much austerity. (23) When because of disease or old age one is unable to perform his prescribed duties for advancement in spiritual consciousness or study of the Vedas, he should practice fasting, not taking any food. (24) He should properly place the fire element in his own self and in this way give up bodily affinity, by which one thinks the body to be one's self or one's own. One should gradually merge the material body into the five elements [earth, water, fire, air and sky].

This may have been possible in days of old but I can't imagine it as a lifestyle for myself. I cannot live in the forest although I do a lot of my japa there or in parks. I also practice fasting as prescribed by ISKCON. On the other hand, I miss my family and sometimes wish I could go home, so I am not very renounced. I am just another American Bachelor, and there are no bachelors in Varnasrama-dharma.

yajante sattvika devan
yaksa-raksamsi rajasah

yajante tamasajanah

yajante--worship; sattvikah--those who are in the mode of goodness; devan--demigods; yaksa-raksamsi--demons; rajasah--those who are in the mode of passion; pretan--spirits of the dead; bhuta-ganan--ghosts; ca--and; anye--others; yajante--worship; tamasah--in the mode of ignorance; janah--people.

TRANSLATION

Men in the mode of goodness worship the demigods; those in the mode of passion worship the demons; and those in the mode of ignorance worship ghosts and spirits.

JOURNAL:

My understanding of this sloka is that when I am worshiping God directly I am no longer being influenced by the modes of material nature. At those times I have no need to ask God for and worship out of love for Him. It is my need that brings me back to the mode of goodness. Catholics do much the same thing when asking the Saints to pray with them in time of need.

sri-bhagavan uvaca--the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; tri-vidha--of three kinds; bhavati--becomes; sraddha--the faith; dehinam--of the embodied; sa--that; sva-bhava-ja--according to his mode of material nature; sattviki--in the mode of goodness; rajasi--in the mode of passion; ca--also; eva--certainly; tamasi--in the mode of ignorance; ca--and; iti--thus; tam--that; srnu--hear from Me.

TRANSLATION

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: According to the modes of nature acquired by the embodied soul, one's faith can be of three kinds--in goodness, in passion or in ignorance. Now hear about this.

PURPORT

Those who know the rules and regulations of the scriptures but out of laziness or indolence give up following these rules and regulations are governed by the modes of material nature. According to their previous activities in the mode of goodness, passion or ignorance, they acquire a nature which is of a specific quality. The association of the living entity with the different modes of nature has been going on perpetually; since the living entity is in contact with material nature, he acquires different types of mentality according to his association with the material modes. But this nature can be changed if one associates with a bona fide spiritual master and abides by his rules and the scriptures. Gradually, one can change his position from ignorance to goodness, or from passion to goodness. The conclusion is that blind faith in a particular mode of nature cannot help a person become elevated to the perfectional stage. One has to consider things carefully, with intelligence, in the association of a bona fide spiritual master. Thus one can change his position to a higher mode of nature.

arjunah uvaca--Arjuna said; ye--those who; sastra-vidhim--the regulations of scripture; utsrjya--giving up; yajante--worship; sraddhaya--full faith; anvitah--possessed of; tesam--of them; nistha--the faith; tu--but; ka--what; krsna--O Krsna; sattvam--in goodness; aho--or else; rajah--in passion; tamah--in ignorance.

TRANSLATION

Arjuna inquired: O Krsna, what is the situation of those who do not follow the principles of scripture but worship according to their own imagination? Are they in goodness, in passion or in ignorance?

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada, in the beginning of his purport, points out; In the Fourth Chapter, thirty-ninth verse, it is said that a person faithful to a particular type of worship gradually becomes elevated to the stage of knowledge and attains the highest perfectional stage of peace and prosperity. Notice how inclusive this statement is. Swamiji always wanted his movement to be non-sectarian and here he shows how the Gita upholds this idea.

TRANSLATION

One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated.

TRANSLATION

The man who has escaped these three gates of hell, O son of Kunti, performs acts conducive to self-realization and thus gradually attains the supreme destination.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada opens his purport with this warning, One should be very careful of these three enemies to human life: lust, anger and greed. The more a person is freed from lust, anger and greed, the more his existence becomes pure. Then he can follow the rules and regulations enjoined in the Vedic literature. The reward for battleing these states-of-mind attacks is the way to a "pure" state of mind; an ability to perform your duties to the Lord better.

kamah krodhas tatha lobhas
tasmad etat trayam tyajet

tri-vidham--of three kinds; narakasya--of hell; idam--this; dvaram--gate; nasanam--destructive; atmanah--of the self; kamah--lust; krodhah--anger; tatha--as well as; lobhah--greed; tasmat--therefore; etat--these; trayam--three; tyajet--one must give up.

TRANSLATION

There are three gates leading to this hell--lust, anger and greed. Every sane man should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.

PURPORT

The beginning of demoniac life is described herein. One tries to satisfy his lust, and when he cannot, anger and greed arise. A sane man who does not want to glide down to the species of demoniac life must try to give up these three enemies, which can kill the self to such an extent that there will be no possibility of liberation from this material entanglement.

TRANSLATION

Attaining repeated birth amongst the species of demoniac life, O son of Kunti, such persons can never approach Me. Gradually they sink down to the most abominable type of existence.

aneka--numerous; citta--by anxieties; vibhrantah--perplexed; moha--of illusions; jala--by a network; samavrtah--surrounded; prasaktah--attached; kama-bhogesu--to sense gratification; patanti--they glide down; narake--into hell; asucau--unclean.

TRANSLATION

Thus perplexed by various anxieties and bound by a network of illusions, they become too strongly attached to sense enjoyment and fall down into hell.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada states in his purport; Each demoniac person thinks that he can live at the sacrifice of all others. We have all known people who are so self-centered that they think of themselves as "entitled". Their mantra seems to be, "Just leave all the rest to me, I need it worst than you". They never hear the child crying.

Srila Prabhupada points out in this sloka; Here the Sanskrit word moha-jala is very significant. Jala means "net"; like fish caught in a net, they have no way to come out.

TRANSLATION

The demoniac person thinks: "So much wealth do I have today, and I will gain more according to my schemes. So much is mine now, and it will increase in the future, more and more. He is my enemy, and I have killed him, and my other enemies will also be killed. I am the lord of everything. I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest man, surrounded by aristocratic relatives. There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give some charity, and thus I shall rejoice." In this way, such persons are deluded by ignorance.

cintam--fears and anxieties; aparimeyam--immeasurable; ca--and; pralaya-antam--unto the point of death; upasritah--having taken shelter of; kama-upabhoga--sense gratification; paramah--the highest goal of life; etavat--thus; iti--in this way; niscitah--having ascertained; asa-pasa--entanglements in a network of hope; sataih--by hundreds; baddhah--being bound; kama--of lust; krodha--and anger; parayanah--always situated in the mentality; ihante--they desire; kama--lust; bhoga--sense enjoyment; artham--for the purpose of; anyayena--illegally; artha--of wealth; sancayan--accumulation.

TRANSLATION

They believe that to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification.

TRANSLATION

"'Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī's twenty-five chief transcendental qualities are: (1) She is very sweet. (2) She is always freshly youthful. (3) Her eyes are restless. (4) She smiles brightly. (5) She has beautiful, auspicious lines. (6) She makes Kṛṣṇa happy with Her bodily aroma. (7) She is very expert in singing. (8) Her speech is charming. (9) She is very expert in joking and speaking pleasantly. (10) She is very humble and meek. (11) She is always full of mercy. (12) She is cunning. (13) She is expert in executing Her duties. (14) She is shy. (15) She is always respectful. (16) She is always calm. (17) She is always grave. (18) She is expert in enjoying life. (19) She is situated at the topmost level of ecstatic love. (20) She is the reservoir of loving affairs in Gokula. (21) She is the most famous of submissive devotees. (22) She is very affectionate to elderly people. (23) She is very submissive to the love of Her friends. (24) She is the chief gopī. (25) She always keeps Kṛṣṇa under Her control. In short, She possesses unlimited transcendental qualities, just as Lord Kṛṣṇa does.'

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 3.29.25

arcādāv arcayet tāvad
īśvaraḿ māḿ sva-karma-kṛt
yāvan na veda sva-hṛdi
sarva-bhūteṣv avasthitam

arcā-ādau — beginning with worship of the Deity; arcayet — one should worship; tāvat — so long; īśvaram — the Supreme Personality of Godhead; mām — Me; sva — his own; karma — prescribed duties; kṛt — performing; yāvat — as long as; na — not; veda — he realizes; sva-hṛdi — in his own heart; sarva-bhūteṣu — in all living entities; avasthitam — situated.

TRANSLATION

Performing his prescribed duties, one should worship the Deity of the Supreme Personality of Godhead until one realizes My presence in his own heart and in the hearts of other living entities as well.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport; In other words, one should not be satisfied simply by discharging his duties properly; he must realize his relationship and the relationship of all other living entities with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

kamam--lust; asritya--taking shelter of; duspuram--insatiable; dambha--of pride; mana--and false prestige; mada-anvitah--absorbed in the conceit; mohat--by illusion; grhitva--taking; asat--nonpermanent; grahan--things; pravartante--they flourish; asuci--to the unclean; vratah--avowed.

TRANSLATION

Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent.

etam--this; drstim--vision; avastabhya--accepting; nasta--having lost; atmanah--themselves; alpa-buddhayah--the less intelligent; prabhavanti--flourish; ugra-karmanah--engaged in painful activities; ksayaya--for destruction; jagatah--of the world; ahitah--unbeneficial.

TRANSLATION

Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world.
