SLOKA OF THE DAY:

Bhagavad-gītā As It Is -
Chapter 2 Text 40
nehābhikrama-nāśo 'sti
pratyavāyo na vidyate
sv-alpam apy asya dharmasya
trāyate mahato bhayāt

na — there is not; iha — in this yoga; abhikrama — in endeavoring; nāśaḥ — loss; asti — there is; pratyavāyaḥ — diminution; na — never; vidyate — there is; su-alpam — a little; api — although; asya — of this; dharmasya — occupation; trāyate — releases; mahataḥ — from very great; bhayāt — danger.

TRANSLATION

In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.

JOURNAL:

In his purport Srila Prabhupada writes; One percent done in Kṛṣṇa consciousness bears permanent results, so that the next beginning is from the point of two percent, whereas in material activity without a hundred percent success there is no profit. Ajāmila performed his duty in some percentage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, but the result he enjoyed at the end was a hundred percent, by the grace of the Lord. There is a nice verse in this connection in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.5.17):

tyaktvā sva-dharmaḿ caraṇāmbujaḿ harer
bhajann apakvo 'tha patet tato yadi
yatra kva vābhadram abhūd amuṣya kiḿ
ko vārtha āpto 'bhajatāḿ sva-dharmataḥ

"If someone gives up his occupational duties and works in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and then falls down on account of not completing his work, what loss is there on his part? And what can one gain if one performs his material activities perfectly?"
Or, as the Christians say, "What profiteth a man if he gain the whole world yet suffers the loss of his eternal soul?"

Sometimes, while chanting my japa, I feel like I am getting nowhere; just spinning my wheels. It is at times like these I try to remember slokas such as the one above. In their remembrance I find strength to continue; hope as I push ahead.

Once Yamuna-devi, in the temple, in the presence of Prabhupada and the devotees, who were chanting japa, stopped her japa to write down some realizations. Seeing her Prabhupada asked, “Yamuna, have you finished your rounds?” She replied, “No, Srila Prabhupada. I have two rounds to go.” Prabhupada said, “First finish your rounds before you write."

TRANSLATION

O king of the Kauravas, in this way Lord Balaraama, the king of the Yaadavas, spent that springtime night with the gopis. Even today the Yamuna' flows in many divided streams at that place, a testimony to the great strength, equal to that of a host of elephants, of Lord Balaraama, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A person who hears or recounts these pastimes of Lord Balaraama destroys the entirety of a great host of sins and attains transcendental bliss. What more do you wish to hear?"

[Thus ends Chapter Nine of the Garga Samhita also known as Shri Raama-raasa-kridaa (Lord Balaraama's Raasa Dance).]

JOURNAL:

My closest family connection is with my older brother. He is a great guy, well to do, with a quiet Christian attitude. He supports my lifestyle and sometimes helps financially.

Back on March 31 I read Srila Prabupada's purport on SB10.2.13 where he explains how Balarama is in the Maha-mantra (see post March 31, 2014).  I also read an article online (see post April 14) which said; Balarama, who has the same original form of Krsna, is Himself a cowherd boy in Vrndavana, and He also considers Himself to belong to the ksatriya race in Dvaraka. Thus His color and dress are different, and He is called a pastime form of Krsna. I found it odd that Krishna was the younger brother instead of the older. The fact was that I had never
considered Lord Balarama and his activities.

This thought led me to thoughts of all the love I have for my older brother so, I decided to make Krishna/Balarama a focus of my meditations with the hope that I might more fully understand this rasa that both Krishna and I enjoy. I went online and found a beautiful photo of the deities in Vrndavana and, for the last few months, I have been saying my japa in front of it.

Of course, there have been many benefits to saying  japa. Since adding the photo of Krishna/Balarama, one of the more noticeable benefits has been increased feelings of thankfulness and protection, stemming from a "brotherly" love.

SLOKA OF THE DAY:

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.2.13
garbha-sańkarṣaṇāt taḿ vai
prāhuḥ sańkarṣaṇaḿ bhuvi
rāmeti loka-ramaṇād
balabhadraḿ balocchrayāt

garbha-sańkarṣaṇāt — because He will be taken from the womb of Devakī to that of Rohiṇī; tam — Him (Rohiṇī-nandana, the son of Rohiṇī); vai — indeed; prāhuḥ — people will call; sańkarṣaṇam — by the name Sańkarṣaṇa; bhuvi — in the world; rāma iti — He will also be called Rāma; loka-ramaṇāt — because of His special mercy in enabling people in general to become devotees; balabhadram — He will also be called Balabhadra; bala-ucchrayāt — because of extensive bodily strength.

TRANSLATION

The son of Rohiṇī will also be celebrated as Sańkarṣaṇa because of being sent from the womb of Devakī to the womb of Rohiṇī. He will be called Rāma because of His ability to please all the inhabitants of Gokula, and He will be known as Balabhadra because of His extensive physical strength.

PURPORT

These are some of the reasons why Balarāma is known as Sańkarṣaṇa, Balarāma or sometimes Rāma. In the mahā-mantra — Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare — people sometimes object when Rāma is accepted as Balarāma. But although devotees of Lord Rāma may object, they should know that there is no difference between Balarāma and Lord Rāma. Here Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam clearly states that Balarāma is also known as Rāma (rāmeti). Therefore, it is not artificial for us to speak of Lord Balarāma as Lord Rāma. Jayadeva Gosvāmī also speaks of three Rāmas: Paraśurāma, Raghupati Rāma and Balarāma. All of them are Rāmas.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada states in his purport; This faith is attained by the discharge of devotional service, and by chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, which cleanses one's heart of all material dirt. Over and above this, one should control the senses.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada ends his purport with the definition of "maya"; Whatever existence is not founded on the energy of Krsna is called maya, "that which is not."

I rose early this morning and finished over half my quota, and this blog post, by 4:00 AM. I then tuned into the Los Angels temple site for Mangal arti. I must do this more often. Not being rushed while doing my japa before work is best!

Indeed, You alone know Yourself by Your own internal potency, O Supreme Person, origin of all, Lord of all beings, God of gods, Lord of the universe!

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada states in his purport; The Supreme Truth is realized in three aspects: as impersonal Brahman, localized Paramatma and at last as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. While chanting japa I like to use this progression. I first try to "see" Krishna in what is around me. Then to feel Him within me. If I am successful I begin feel His love for me.

 JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada opens his purport with this beautiful statement; Everything is resting on the Supreme Personality of Godhead; therefore He is the ultimate rest. I find my late evening japa takes on this quality of rest very nicely.

JOURNAL:

I have a new job that runs twelve hour shifts and I will be working the graveyard. This changes my japa time (not to mention the rest of my life). I like chanting my rounds in the quiet of the early morning hours but now I must chant them in the middle of the afternoon. In today's sloka Srila Prabhupada reminds me what is important; death is coming, chant while I can, so I will be ready!

Sri Sukadeva Gosvämi continued: Thereafter, the King of the elephants, Gajendra, fixed his mind in his heart with perfect intelligence and chanted a mantra which he had learned in his previous birth as Indradyumna and which he remembered by the grace of Krsna.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prahupada, in his purport, gives us two other mantras that we may want to try; It is imperative, therefore, that all devotees in Krsna consciousness practice chanting some mantra. Certainly one should chant the Hare Krsna mantra, which is the mahä-mantra, or great mantra, and also one should practice chanting cintämani-prakara-sadmasu or the Nrsimha strotra (ito nrsimhah parato nrsimho yato yato yämi tato nrsimhah).

The Assumption of Mary

Roman Catholics celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary today. This is a day of obligation celebrated by fasting and the chanting of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Srila Prabhupada has this to say about the rosary:

Therefore, even if you accept designations like "Hindu," "Christian," or "Muhammadan," if you simply chant the name of God found in your own scriptures, you will attain the spiritual platform. Human life is meant for self-realization—to learn how to love God. That is the actual beauty of man. Whether you discharge this duty as a Hindu, a Christian, or a Muhammadan, it doesn't matter—but discharge it!

Father Emmanuel: I agree.

Srila Prabhupäda [pointing to a string of 108 meditation beads]:
We always have these beads, just as you have your rosary. You are chanting, but why don't the other Christians also chant? Why should they miss this opportunity as human beings?

TRANSLATION

One who is not disturbed in mind even amidst the threefold miseries or elated when there is happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.

JOURNAL:

By this definition, I have a long way to go before anyone will call me a sage. The best I seem to be able to do when the storms of emotion hit is to turn to the holy names. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare. I find it easy to praise the Lord when things go right. Harder to cry to Him when things go wrong.

The Spiritualization of Energy

by Hayagriva Das Brahmachary
(Howard Wheeler)

"The world is charg'd with the grandeur of God . . . ."
—Gerard Manly Hopkins

(Mantra to be sung at the top of your lungs to whatever tune you like from dawn to dawn to dawn without cessation forever and ever and ever into eternity.)

HARE KRISHNA, HARE KRISHNA
KRISHNA KRISHNA
HARE HARE, HARE RAMA
HARE RAMA, RAMA RAMA
HARE HARE
All that we ever see
Is God's blissful energy.
O God's blissful energy!
O God's blissful energy!
God's blissful energy
All just for you and me.
O God's blissful energy.
Blissful, blissful energy!
Wipe your eyes
So you can see,
Blow your cool,
Don't play the fool—
Can't you see?
We're His very
E N E R G Y
Energy!
Sing it, shout it,
Tell the entire
World about it.

Chant it, rant it!
Dance, enhance it.
Don't sit and sigh,
Let's all get high.
Don't feel morose,
Have a double dose
Of
Energy!
Energy!
It's always, always
ALWAYS free!
FREE! FREE!
Don't be suspect,
It's direct
From God to thee,
And it's FREE!
ENERGY! E N E R G Y!
Blissful, blissful
E N E R G Y!
HARE KRISHNA! HARE KRISHNA!
KRISHNA! KRISHNA!
HARE! HARE! HARE RAMA!
HARE RAMA! RAMA! RAMA!
HARE! HARE!

"'Hare' means 'the energy of the Lord.' So when we sing 'Hare Krishna,' we are saying, 'O Lord, O the wonderful energy of the Lord, O Lord please accept me who am no more than the straw in the street.'"—- Swami Bhaktivedanta

vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya
navani grhnati naro 'parani
tatha sarirani vihaya jirnany
anyani samyati navani dehi

vasamsi--garments; jirnani--old and worn out; yatha--just as; vihaya--giving up; navani--new garments; grhnati--does accept; narah--a man; aparani--others; tatha--in the same way; sarirani--bodies; vihaya--giving up; jirnani--old and useless; anyani--different; samyati--verily accepts; navani--new sets; dehi--the embodied.

TRANSLATION

As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

JOURNAL:

This morning my quarter-mala bracelet broke. Being on the road as much as I am, I say a lot of my japa on these beads. When it broke the beads flew off the elastic string in all directions, leaving me holding only the Krsna Bead in my hand.

So this morning I've been doing "uncounted" japa, which has a different feel to it than "counted" japa does. It is hard to explain this difference. I want to use phrases like freely said, and more spontaneous, but they are misleading.

However you say it, a fresh experience with the Holy Names is always welcome. I'll order a new bracelet Wednesday and carry my old, trusty bead bag in the meantime. I don't think my original string of japa-mala beads will ever break.

Sanatorium by SDG

The adult Boy Scout master said, "Does this sanatorium belong to a certain religion?"

The county dormitory chief hesitated and said, "Yes, this was built by the Hare Krsna religion." Some of the Boy Scouts began to titter and sing the Hare Krsna Mantra. The inmates joined in with them and sustained a kirtana for about one minute.

Satsvarupa das Goswami - Sanatorium

JOURNAL:

This scene in the book reminds me of how my friends and I would act when we would see the Hare Krishnas on the street. The devotees always smiled at us even though we would be teasing them. At the time I thought they were just humoring us kids but now I realize that at eight or nine years old I was chanting Hare Krishna and enjoying!

TRANSLATION

Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of miserly weakness. In this condition I am asking You to tell me for certain what is best for me. Now I am Your disciple, and a soul surrendered unto You. Please instruct me.

JOURNAL:

Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport; All Vedic literatures advise us to approach a bona fide spiritual master to get free from the perplexities of life, which happen without our desire. They are like a forest fire that somehow blazes without being set by anyone. Similarly, the world situation is such that perplexities of life automatically appear, without our wanting such confusion.

Yesterday I woke up late. I had just enough time to throw myself together before a 9:AM meeting so I didn't start my japa until it was over. At 10:30 I found myself in a small park on one of the first nice days of spring; picking up my beads and looking around at the other people who had come out to enjoy the weather.

As I chanted a group of folks played a game of "Hide and Seek", hiding behind trees and laughing. It reminded me of the stories of Krishna and His friends playing games in the forest of Vrindavan. Blossoms fell from the trees making room for the fruit they would bear later in the year, reminding me of how we lose the old body to make way for something better. It was then that I realized I could feel the Lord in the life around me.

I concentrate on my japa better when I am alone in my room. I pronounce the Names of the Lord better when I am walking. But the rasa that is obtained somedays while sitting comfortably in the Brahmajyoti effulgence, chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, is not to be missed!

In his lecture on this sloka (01/31/1975, Hawaii) Srila Prabhupada ends with this statement; "So, one thing we request is, those who do not comply with our rules and regulations at least they may chant Hare Krishna where ever they may be."

Ki Jaya Srila Prabhupada, who has so much mercy on us!
