SLOKA OF THE DAY:

Bhagavad Gita As It Is -
Chapter 2 Text 13
dehino 'smin yatha dehe
kaumaram yauvanam jara
tatha dehantara-praptir
dhiras tatra na muhyati

dehinah--of the embodied; asmin--in this; yatha--as; dehe--in the body; kaumaram--boyhood; yauvanam--youth; jara--old age; tatha--similarly; deha-antara--of transference of the body; praptih--achievement; dhirah--the sober; tatra--thereupon; na--never; muhyati--is deluded.

TRANSLATION

As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.

At the bottom of the Gita Introduction page of this blog is a nice video lecture by Srila Prabhupada on this sloka. I also recommend Beyond Birth and Death, Prabhupada's in-depth study of reincarnation.

Here is a nice quote from today's sloka lecture (11-29-1968, Los Angeles) by Srila Prabhupada; But this mantra anyway you chant, neglectfully or properly, chant Hare Krishna and the result is there.

tat--that; ca--also;samsmrtya--remembering; samsmrtya--remembering; rupam--form; ati--greatly; adbhutam--wonderful; hareh--of Lord Krsna; vismayah--wonder; me--my; mahan--great; rajan--O King; hrsyami--I am enjoying; ca--also; punah punah--repeatedly.

TRANSLATION

O King, as I remember the wonderul form of Lord Krsna, I am struck with wonder more and more, and I rejoice again and again.

tasmad om ity udahrtya
yajna-dana-tapah-kriyah
pravartante vidhanoktah
satatam brahma-vadinam

tasmat--therefore; om--beginning with om; iti--thus; udahrtya--indicating; yajna--of sacrifice; dana--charity; tapah--and penance; kriyah--performances; pravartante--begin; vidhana-uktah--according to scriptural regulation; satatam--always; brahma-vadinam--of the transcendentalists.

TRANSLATION

Therefore, transcendentalists undertaking performances of sacrifice, charity and penance in accordance with scriptural regulations begin always with om, to attain the Supreme.

JOURNAL:

During Lent, Catholics practice sacrifice, penance and alms giving. This is generally done by not eating meat on Fridays and holy days. The money saved by not buying meat is then given to the poor. Many a priest has asked his congregation to continue these practices year round, and some denominations, such as the Franciscans whose main role in the church is to work for social justice, push their practitioners to become vegetarians as a lifestyle. Once again I am amazed at the similarities between the religions.

Nrsimhadeva's Appearance Day

Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.31,33
na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiḿ hi viṣṇuḿ
durāśayā ye bahir-artha-māninaḥ
andhā yathāndhair upanīyamānās
te 'pīśa-tantryām uru-dāmni baddhāḥ

ity uktvoparataḿ putraḿ
hiraṇyakaśipū ruṣā
andhīkṛtātmā svotsańgān
nirasyata mahī-tale

SYNONYMS

na — not; te — they; viduḥ — know; sva-artha-gatim — the ultimate goal of life, or their own real interest; hi — indeed; viṣṇum — Lord Viṣṇu and His abode; durāśayāḥ — being ambitious to enjoy this material world; ye — who; bahiḥ — external sense objects; artha-māninaḥ — considering as valuable; andhāḥ — persons who are blind; yathā — just as; andhaiḥ — by other blind men; upanīyamānāḥ — being led; te — they; api — although; īśa-tantryām — to the ropes (laws) of material nature; uru — having very strong; dāmni — cords; baddhāḥ — bound.
iti — thus; uktvā — speaking; uparatam — stopped; putram — the son; hiraṇyakaśipuḥ — Hiraṇyakaśipu; ruṣā — with great anger; andhīkṛta-ātmā — made blind to self-realization; sva-utsańgāt — from his lap; nirasyata — threw; mahī-tale — upon the ground.

TRANSLATION

Persons who are strongly entrapped by the consciousness of enjoying material life, and who have therefore accepted as their leader or guru a similar blind man attached to external sense objects, cannot understand that the goal of life is to return home, back to Godhead, and engage in the service of Lord Viṣṇu. As blind men guided by another blind man miss the right path and fall into a ditch, materially attached men led by another materially attached man are bound by the ropes of fruitive labor, which are made of very strong cords, and they continue again and again in materialistic life, suffering the threefold miseries.

After Prahlada Maharaja had spoken in this way and become silent, Hiraṇyakaśipu, blinded by anger, threw him off his lap and onto the ground.

Srimad Bhagavatam 7.8.29
viṣvak sphurantaḿ grahaṇāturaḿ harir
vyālo yathākhuḿ kuliśākṣata-tvacam
dvāry ūrum āpatya dadāra līlayā
nakhair yathāhiḿ garuḍo mahā-viṣam

SYNONYMS

viṣvak — all around; sphurantam — moving his limbs; grahaṇa-āturam — afflicted because of being captured; hariḥ — the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Nṛsiḿhadeva; vyālaḥ — a snake; yathā — just as; ākhum — a mouse; kuliśa-akṣata — not cut even by the thunderbolt thrown by Indra; tvacam — whose skin; dvāri — on the threshold of the door; ūrum — on His thigh; āpatya — placing; dadāra — pierced; līlayā — very easily; nakhaiḥ — with the nails; yathā — just as; ahim — a snake; garuḍaḥ — Garuḍa, the carrier of Lord Viṣṇu; mahā-viṣam — very venomous.

TRANSLATION

As a snake captures a mouse or Garuḍa captures a very venomous snake, Lord Nṛsiḿhadeva captured Hiraṇyakaśipu, who could not be pierced even by the thunderbolt of King Indra. As Hiraṇyakaśipu moved his limbs here, there and all around, very much afflicted at being captured, Lord Nṛsiḿhadeva placed the demon on His lap, supporting him with His thighs, and in the doorway of the assembly hall the Lord very easily tore the demon to pieces with the nails of His hand.

JOURNAL:

I have never had much attraction to Lord Krishna's incarnation as Lord Nrsimhadeva until I went on the road and realized that I needed protection. The Lord has been kind to me and nothing truly bad has happened on my trips away from my family.
All glories to Lord Nrsimhadeva who kills the demons! May He protect us all!

tatra--thereupon; tam--that; buddhi-samyogam- -revival of consciousness; labhate--gains; paurva-dehikam- -from the previous body; yatate--he endeavors; ca--also; tatah--thereafter; bhuyah--again; samsiddhau-- for perfection; kuru-nandana- -O son of Kuru.

TRANSLATION

On taking such a birth, he revives the divine consciousness of his previous life, and he again tries to make further progress in order to achieve complete success, O son of Kuru.

JOURNAL:

Outside of writing this blog and talking to a few people I do not have much service. When I heard about a group of devotees who were trying to place the Bhagavad Gita in one million hotel rooms I got excited and started promoting it here in the sidebar.
